Winter Paw Care: How to Protect Your Dog's Paws from Road Salt and Ice
By Jenny Meharg5 min read

Winter in Dearborn means salted sidewalks, slushy driveways, and icy walks. Your dog's paws handle all of it, and by spring many dogs have dry, cracked, or sore pads. A little routine care through the cold months makes a big difference in how comfortable your dog feels.
Why Road Salt Is Hard on Paws
Ice melt and road salt can dry out and irritate the pads of your dog's feet. Salt crystals can also get stuck between the toes and rub with every step. When dogs lick their paws after a walk, they can swallow some of that residue, which can upset their stomach.
Signs Your Dog's Paws Need Attention
- Licking or chewing at the paws after walks
- Dry, rough, or cracked pads
- Redness between the toes
- Limping or lifting a paw on salted surfaces
- Ice balls packed into the fur between the toes
If you notice bleeding, deep cracks, swelling, or limping that doesn't go away, check with your veterinarian.
Simple Winter Paw Care Routine
Wipe Paws After Every Walk
Keep a towel by the door and wipe each paw when you come inside. A damp cloth or quick rinse with lukewarm water removes salt and chemical residue before your dog can lick it off.
Keep the Paw Hair Trimmed
Long fur between the pads collects snow and ice balls that pull and make walking uncomfortable. Keeping that hair trimmed short helps your dog keep traction and stay comfortable. This is a quick tidy that can be done during a groom.
Moisturize the Pads
A paw balm or lotion made for dogs helps keep pads soft and less likely to crack. Apply it after walks once the paws are clean and dry.
Consider Booties
Dog booties create a barrier between the paws and salted sidewalks. Many dogs need a little time to get used to them, so start with short walks indoors.
Keep Nails at a Healthy Length
Long nails change how a dog places its feet, which can make slippery surfaces even harder to walk on. Learn more in Why Regular Nail Trims Matter for Your Dog's Comfort and Health.
